Former UT Arlington pitcher Dillon Gee recently completed a two-month winter league season in Puerto Rico and finished as one of the top performers. Gee, a right-handed pitcher who was drafted by the New York Mets (21st round) after his junior season at UT Arlington in 2007, pitched for Leones de Ponce in the Puerto Rican Winter League from November to January, where recorded a perfect 4-0 record with a 2.22 earned run average with 43 strikeouts in 48.2 innings pitched. (December 29-January 4) - In three games, senior Candice Champion complied 51 points and 26 rebounds against Tulsa, Texas Southern and Houston Baptist. Champion recorded 12 points and nine rebounds against Tulsa (12/29) at the Tulsa Select Holiday Tournament and repeated that performance with a 21-point, eight rebound effort versus Texas Southern (12/30). Champion was named to the all-tournament team, her second all-tourney recognition this season. In the first game of the New Year against HBU (1/3), Champion led UTA with 18 points, including nine boards and gave the Mavericks their sixth win of the season.
(December) Anthony Vereen led the Mavericks in scoring at 20.7 points per game in their 6 December games. He led the team in scoring and was second in rebounding at 5.3 per game. During the month he shot 58.1% from the field and made 33 of 41 free throws (80.5%). He scored a career-high 28 points at No. 21 Baylor on Dec. 20. He also scored 20 or more points three times and led the team in scoring 3 times. He was named to the Grizzly Basketball Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 23.0 ppg in the two games the Mavericks played. During the month of December he also moved into the top 10 on the UTA all-time scoring list.
