Negreanu named women's Newcomer of the Year; men place two players on first team.

FRISCO, Texas - Five UT Arlington athletes were recognized Thursday when the league office announced the 2008 All-Southland Conference men's and women's tennis teams.

Freshman Daiana Negreanu is the women's Newcomer of the Year after posting a 7-3 record at No. 3 singles. She is the third Maverick to capture the award, joining Carolin Schappacher (2002) and Gwendolyn Gehrendt (2001).

Freshman Monika Hadvigerova earned a spot on the all-conference second team at No. 2 singles, where she was 8-1 this season.

The UTA men's team placed two players on the first team in singles, with freshman Brieuc Hamon at No. 4 and sophomore Gonzalo Bienzobas at No. 5. They were 5-0 and 4-2 in league action, respectively.

Freshman Hugo Taracido made the second team with a 3-2 record at No. 3 singles in conference competition.
