Mavericks to battle for points in field events, position in prelims on Saturday

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - - McNeese State's men scored 29 points in the first day of the Southland Conference Track and Field Championships, and the Texas State women tallied 30 to open up action in Huntsville, Texas.

The finals of just three men's and three women's events were decided on the shortened first day.

The real action gets underway on Saturday, the second day of the meet, when sprint and middle distance preliminaries will decid who is in position to score points and battle for a conference title. A few event finals will take place on Saturday, and UT Arlington stands to score. The men's and women's long jump events and men's and women's 3000-meter steeplechase will be a few of the eight events that will yield team points. All other events are preliminaries.

UTA did have competitors on Friday in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.

After four events, UTA sophomore Charquenta Dishmon has 788 points and stands in fourth. Ebbonye Johnson of Stephen F. Austin leads with a four-event score of 841.

In the men's decathlon, UTA's Yavor Gerenski stands in 11th.
